Centretown Movies is an annual outdoor film festival created by the community, for the community, to revitalize underused urban space in Ottawa’s downtown. Every Friday and Saturday beginning in mid-July through the month of August, Centretown Movies shows popular, family friendly movies in our open-air, walk-in theatre in Dundonald Park. Admission is always pay-what-you-can. Centretown Movies is a volunteer driven project, run by a volunteer organizing committee. The festival has one paid employee—the festival coordinator, who is hired for eight weeks during the summer.
The project was founded primarily by a grant from the Trillium Foundation. We have four sponsors: The City of Ottawa provides some financial support; Centretown Community Health Centre (CCHC) provides assistance with staffing and administration; the Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation (CCOC) and the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) – National Capital Region provided us with funds in 2016 to update our screening equipment.
The festival was launched in the summer of 2001. Previous seasons have been held at the old Technical High School field, in a vacant lot at the corner of Bank and Slater and on Sparks Street. In 2006, the festival moved to Dundonald Park where it continues to be held today.
